Driving Tips – Costa Rica
A great place to explore with your driving gloves on or off. If you’ve chosen the former then you should do some much needed reading about those Costa Rican roads first. You won’t have a problem if you pay attention to some of the most important pieces of advice and road regulations before getting to grips with the actual driving part of your trip. Here is a guide to advise you on what to do and what not to do whilst driving there.
It is imperative that when driving you should always be carrying the following items:
Driving Rules, Laws and Regulations
Speed Limits and Fines
The following speed limits, unless otherwise stated, must be adhered to at all times on the Costa Rican roads:
Any variations on these standard speed limits will be posted on the road for driver awareness.
Points are removed from license as a way of penalisation, speeding fines will be issued and for more extreme speeds, jail time is a consequence.
Do note that money should never be handed over to traffic police in situ.
The legal limit for alcohol in blood is 0.5%. Anything around this or higher will result in a fine and anything more than 0.75 will result in anywhere from 1 to 3 years in prison.
Drinking and driving is permitted, but being drunk is not, and drunk is defined as having the blood alcohol level mentioned above.
If you are caught drunk at the wheel, then you will face a fine and depending on previous traffic violations, maybe time in prison.
Yellow curbs indicate no-parking zones.
Districts that operate on a ticket-only zone will be indicated by a circular sign with the letter E. The ticket should be obtained from the nearest local hall.
Failure to pay such tickets will result in fines that must be paid.
It can be difficult to find a space on the streets of Costa Rica; therefore it is recommended wherever possible to use public car parks.
Parking is not permitted on or next to yellow kerbs, in front of garages or driveways, nor is it permitted in no-parking zones, clearly indicated by signs.
