Driving Tips – Israel
Driving in Israel is relatively affordable and is a good way to get around the country if you feel confident enough to do so. However, traffic can often be heavy and chaotic, and so make sure that you familiarise yourself with the rules and regulations of Israeli roads before throwing yourself in at the deep end. Here are a few tips to get you started:
As in any country, it is important that you carry the relevant documents on you at all times if driving in Israel. You should make sure that you bring:
Driving Rules, Laws and Regulations
Speed Limits and Fines
You must adhere to the following speed limits, unless otherwise stated, when driving in Israel:
Speed cameras are in operation throughout Israel, and failing to adhere to the speed limits can result in a fine of NIS 750 or more. In some cases, speeding can even result in having your license suspended.
Drink driving is not permitted at all in Israel, with a Blood Alcohol Content (BAC) of 0.0mg/100ml as the legal limit. However, in acknowledgement of the fact that certain medications may contain traces of alcohol, tolerance of up to 0.2mg/100ml is permitted. Fines are extremely high if you are found to have a BAC above this, and is more severe for a second offence.
Look for the marking on the side of the road when parking in Israel. Do not stop if there are red and white markings on the curb, whilst red and yellow lines mean parking for public transport only.
Free parking is permitted where there is a grey line at the side of the road; blue and white lines indicate that those with parking permit, available from a nearby machine, may park there for a fee.
Vehicles with a handicapped sticker, however, have much more freedom in where they can park, provided they are not causing obstructions or interfering with traffic.
