About Broome International Airport (BME)

Address: Broome Apt, Broome, Wau (3), 6725, Wa, Wa

  Getting around

Broome International Airport (BME) is located 0.74 km (0.46 mi) northwest of Bedford Park in central Broome, and generally considered the main entry point to the Kimberley region of north Western Australia.

The outback beach city of Broome — if you could call it that — is a popular tourist destination situated on a charming little peninsula that dips into the Indian Ocean. The airport is essentially smack dab in the middle of town, home to an array of attractions, notably Cable Beach Park — a 22-km (14 mi) stretch of sand, sitting approximately 4 km (2.5 mi) from “downtown”. There’s one road in and out of town, the aptly named Broome Road, and with the exception of the Malcolm Douglas Crocodile Park, there is nothing — absolutely nothing on the map for 36 km (21 mi) headed east to the outpost of Roebuck and the junction for Highway 1 (Great Northern Highway). And it’s another 116 km (66 mi) until you hit the settlement of Willare.

Many visitors use (BME) as a gateway to the wilderness and wine country of “The Kimberley”, which could be anywhere within an area of 423,517 sq km (163,521 sq mi) in north Western Australia, roughly equivalent to one California and two Englands. Not renting a car is not an option.

  Choosing your car

Choosing your car hire at (BME) won’t be any more of a hassle simply because of its remote location. On the contrary, almost all visitors will need to rent a car. Therefore, you’ll find airport car rentals from Avis, Europcar, Hertz, Thrifty, and Budget in the arrivals area of the airport. Hyundai compact cars are great for quick trips back and forth from the beach to your hotel. Toyota intermediate and fullsize cars are ideal for exploring the immediate vicinity. Cruise the Great Northern Highway and get off the beaten path in a Mitsubishi SUV. Book a Kia 7-9 seater minivan to accommodate families and larger groups.

Tips and advice for renting a car at Broome Airport

There are two seasons in Broome: wet (November to April) and dry (May to September), and the town’s population nearly triples during the dry season.

Don’t take off out of Broome without a full tank of gas, and once you’re out in the tundra, if you see a fuel station, stop and fill up.

Ride the camels at Cable Beach.

There’s one highway in the Kimberley region, the A1. If you stray from this road, keep in mind that your GPS might not recognize the terrain. Getting lost in the Outback is a worst-case scenario.

Most airport car rentals are restricted from off-road driving. Some SUVs may be good to go, but it’s wise to check with your provider first.

Defined by stunning coastal beaches and inhospitable terrain, Western Australia is not a place that suffers fools gladly. Driving between sunset and sunrise is not recommended outside of developed areas, i.e. the town of Broome. There’s little in the way of highway illumination and animal traffic picks up after dusk. Meanwhile, you might roll up on some remote outpost after hours of driving to find the only fuel station closed for the night.
