About Canberra Airport (CBR)

Address: Terminal Building Canberra Airport, Canberra - Airport, Canberra, 2610

  Getting around

Canberra Airport (CBR) serves the capital city of Australia, as well as the surrounding Australian Capital Territory (ACT), located in the southeast of New South Wales. The ideal transport option in Canberra is to rent a car, and (CBR) - situated 8 km (5.0 mi) from Canberra’s city center — has a number of major airport car rental companies situated just outside the lower level of the terminal.

Canberra is a remarkably well-planned city, with loads of attractions centered around Lake Burley Griffin — a massive man-made reservoir and a great place for outdoor activities, featuring cycling trails, parks, and nature reserves.

Getting around Canberra is generally pleasant, with excellent roads and a dearth of traffic congestion. However, watch for posted speed limits, which vary dramatically. Canberra has a reputation for a number of variations on the speed trap. Fixed speed traps are highly visible with multiple signs informing motorists that they’re about to enter a speed zone. Conversely, mobile speed traps are set up in white vans with signs informing motorists after the fact that their speed has been clocked. Meanwhile, most traffic signals double as speed cameras — with not nearly as much notice given.

Unless posted otherwise, the default speed limit on all roads in the ACT is 50 km/h. And take extra special care in school zones, where the speed limit is 40 km/h from 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM on school days.

  Choosing your car

Once you’ve made your travel plans, choosing a car is a few mouse clicks away. Canberra Airport car rental agencies offer a modest selection of cars, SUVs, and minivans to choose from. Budget offers great rates on a Hyundai i20 compact car. All major car hire companies will have a good selection of standard cars (Toyota Corolla) and estate wagons (Commodore Wagon SV6). Settle into a Kia Serato full-sized models from Enterprise — perfect for small families. Europcar has larger groups covered with the Kia Carnival 7-9 seater minivans. Thrifty can get you into a Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross SUV for outdoor recreation at Lake Burley Griffin.

2

Temperatures in Canberra rise above 30ºC from December to March. The winter months (June-August) can be icy cold due to its proximity to the Snowy Mountains.

4

The commercial district of Canberra is known as Civic, but it’s generally signposted as "City".
