Townsville Airport is 5km from the centre of Townsville city, on the north-eastern coast of Queensland. Also known as Townsville International Airport, and Garbutt Airport, it is a major regional airport.
An all-year round destination, this part of Queensland is famous for its beautiful islands, the Great Barrier reef, the Outback and the exotic Tropics. Whether you are heading north, south, east or west, Townsville is a great base for exploring this diverse region.
There is no better way to get a sense of how big Australia is, than to rent a car. From the beautiful Paluma Range National Park to the north, the Burdekin Falls Dam in the south, to the historic gold mining town of Charters Towers in the west, or Magnetic Island with pristine beaches towards the east - you are spoilt for choice. All within a pleasant day trip from Townsville.
From Townsville Airport it is an easy 10-minute drive to the city with little traffic and clear directions.
The car hire desks are conveniently located at the arrivals end of the terminal and the car park is just outside the terminal. Expect a hassle-free experience.
Parking in the city is metered, with some free minutes, but there is also free parking in side streets and outer lying areas. If you wish to go by ferry to an island that do not allow cars, you can leave your car at the allocated car park on the mainland.

Tips and advice
Ferries are available to most of the islands of northern Queensland. However, cars are not always permitted on the islands, so check before making plans.
If you want to explore more of the region by 4WD, but are not experienced, you can do a one-day course with a 4WD training centre.
Speed limits are heavily enforced in Australia, particularly around peak holiday and travel periods. Fines can even be doubled during these periods.
Due to its tropical climate, cyclones can hit the Townsville area during December and January. Many rental cars are not permitted to drive in such conditions so keep an eye out when signing your rental contract.
Towns can be far apart, so take enough water and plan your fuel stops carefully.
Plan ahead before you leave for a longer road trip, even if using a GPS. It is easy to get lost.
