About Montreal Trudeau International Airport (YUL)

Address: 975 Romeo-vachon, Dorval, H4y1h1 , Quebec, Qc, Qc

  Getting around

Montreal Trudeau International Airport (YUL) is the provincial hub of Quebec, Canada, located 20 km (12 mi) from downtown Montreal. Airport car rental counters are conveniently situated in the Rent a Car Building adjacent to the main terminal. Eight major car hire firms including Alamo, Dollar, and Hertz provide a comprehensive selection of vehicles to choose from.

Quebec is a bilingual province, so the first and most pressing issue about getting around Montreal is a matter of language. Although the majority of highway signage is in both French and English, visitors should familiarize themselves with some traffic appropriate vocabulary and phrases — “arret” means stop, “autoroute” means highway — before venturing out onto the street. Additionally, be advised that Canada is based on the metric system, so distances are exclusively in kilometers and speeds posted in kilometers per hour.

Otherwise, driving in Montreal is comparable to any big city of the same size and population. Downtown Montreal is best characterized as an extensive web of one-way streets, but parking is most likely to be your main concern. Parking garage rates are at the high end of “expensive” and yet, the lots always seem to be full. Do-it-yourself motorists will discover metered street parking regulations are written — you guessed it — in French, and hours are posted in military time (for instance, 13H or 1300 translates to 1:00 PM).

Many delightful attractions are found outside the city limits, most notably, Mont-Tremblant: a year-round destination for skiing, boating, and other activities, less than a two-hour drive from downtown Montreal.

  Choosing your car

Once your travel plans have been set in motion, you can rest assured that choosing your car may be the easiest part of the trip. Rent a compact Kia for navigating the city without taxing your budget. An intermediate to full-size Nissan offers comfort and easy driving. Likewise, a spacious Ford estate wagon offers a smooth ride with plenty of room for kids and baggage. You’ll find premium luxury BWW vehicles available at affordable rates. And of course, larger groups and families will want to pile into Chyrsler 7-9 seater minivan for that trip to Mont-Tremblant.

  Tips and advice

Traffic signals in Quebec have a bit of a twist. A flashing green light signals a left turn. Right-on-red turns are prohibited and a green arrow means go straight, but no turns in either direction. Some intersections have restricted turns during certain hours, generally during rush hours — also posted in military time.

Many (YUP) airport car rental firms offer free extras such as GPS, child safety seats, or bicycle racks.

Most companies at (YUP) will rent a car to drivers between 21 and 24 years old — with a surcharge. Additionally, restrictions will apply to make and model.

Roundabouts are prevalent throughout Quebec; traffic flows in a counter-clockwise direction.

Consider enrolling in your car hire provider’s “preferred service” program, and skip the paperwork and lines at the airport.
