About Split - Airport (SPU)
Address: Counter In Arrival Terminal, Split, 21000
Located only 15 miles (about 25 kilometers) from the city of Split, Split Airport (SPU) is the second-largest airport in Croatia. It’s the perfect place to rent a car and embark on a breathtaking roundtrip along the world-famous Dalmatian Coast, stopping to explore its many small villages and harbors. In Split, you can visit the ruins of Diocletian's Palace, a well-preserved ancient Roman site, as well as the sophisticated harbor area of Riva.
From the airport, you will need to count about 30 minutes to drive to the center of Split. The historical coastal town of Trogir, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is only 3.2 miles (5.2 kilometers) away from the airport; it takes about 10 minutes driving to get there. Zagreb, the charming capital city of Croatia, is approximately 3 hours and 40 minutes away from Split Airport by car.
Choosing your car
You will find several well-known car rental providers at Split Airport, including Avis, Europcar and Sixt. Most of the counters are located directly at the airport; however, be advised there may be a short walk to the parking lot where you will pick up your car. For an unforgettable road trip along the coastline, consider splurging on a convertible or sports car.
Business travelers may want to book a luxury Mercedes-Benz or BMW, with top-of-the-line extras for optimal comfort. For travelers on a budget, a compact Volkswagen, Smart or Fiat will get you to where you need to go for the best price. Larger groups can book a people mover or 7—12 person passenger mini van from Renault, Mercedes or Opel. Families can also go for an SUV-style car from a manufacturer such as Mazda, Toyota or Nissan.
Tips and advice
For optimal peace of mind, you may want to purchase a supplemental insurance policy for your airport car rental, which can cover a range of potential issues.
