About Faroe Islands  (FO)

The wild and beautiful Faroe Islands are located in the North Atlantic Ocean, between Norway, Iceland and the United Kingdom. Officially part of Denmark, the group of 18 islands offers hikers and birdwatchers idyllic hikes and unparalleled views of windswept cliffs. The stunning natural landscape is reminiscent of parts of Norway and distant New Zealand.

The capital city of Tórshavn, located on the island of Streymoy, has excellent restaurants and charming old houses with grass-covered roofs. Some of the Faroe Islands’ most spectacular attractions include Múlafossur Waterfall, the town of Vestmanna, Kallur Lighthouse and the lake of Sørvágsvatn. Well-connected by an excellent network of under-sea tunnels, bridges and ferries, the islands are a wonderful place for you to rent a car in the Faroe Islands and plan the road trip of a lifetime.

  Getting around

Driving in the Faroe Islands is a joy, with roads that are overall in outstanding condition. You will, however, need to keep a few things in mind. The main thing to remember is that the weather is highly unpredictable, and can turn from sun to strong wind and rain, or thick fog, in an instant.

You will almost surely encounter an old one-lane tunnel on your road trip. These tunnels have turnouts at 100-meter intervals. Note that if you are driving on the right-hand side (or come across a truck), you have to yield and stop at the turnout if you meet another car. Be sure to keep your headlights on at all times, as older tunnels can be quite dark. Keep in mind that you should drive your car rental in the Faroe Islands on the right-hand side of the road.

  Choosing your car

Major Faroe Islands car rental providers include Sixt, Hertz, Europcar and Avis. For solo travelers or couples on a budget, a cheap car rental such as a compact car offers convenience and top value. Larger groups can go for a spacious SUV, or a 7 — 12 person mini van or people mover. For optimal comfort, you can book a luxury car rental such as a Mercedes-Benz or BMW for your Faroe Island getaway.
