Located in the north of Germany, Hamburg Airport serves the port city of Hamburg and neighboring areas. While not as busy as major hubs Frankfurt or Munich, it is nevertheless a bustling international airport, welcoming 17.23 million passengers in 2018. The airport is conveniently located just under 7 miles (11 kilometers) from the beautiful river walks and charming coffee shops of vibrant downtown Hamburg.
Electing to rent a car is a great choice for your next trip to Hamburg to discover other cities and sites in Northern Germany, a region rich in tradition and history. The spectacular city of Lübeck, for example, which is about 42 miles (roughly 68 kilometers) from Hamburg Airport, is a UNESO World Heritage Site. Located on the Trave river, it features many splendid examples of red brick Gothic architecture.
Hamburg Airport has two terminals. There are seven major airport car rental companies, including Avis/Budget, Enterprise, Hertz, Sixt and Europcar, with counters at Terminal 2 ground (arrivals) level. If you are are flying into Terminal 1, you can take a free airport shuttle bus to Terminal 2.
To get into central Hamburg from the airport by car, you will need to count just under a half hour, although this may vary depending on weather and traffic conditions. The airport is well-connected and is right off the highway B433. Whether headed to Hamburg or onward to other cities, this makes it easy to get started on your journey.
Choosing your car
In the winter, you may want to rent an SUV or other larger vehicle, which will have additional traction in case of inclement weather. Hamburg Airport car rental companies offer lots of great choices to meet your needs, from luxury sedans (such as a Mercedes-Benz or Lexus) to budget-friendly compact cars (such as a Volkswagen) or practical family-sized options such as minivans.
Tips and advice
As Hamburg is located in the north of Germany, close to Denmark, stormy winter weather can sometimes throw travel plans up in the air. Be sure to keep an eye on the forecast when planning a trip and reserving a car rental at Hamburg Airport during the winter months.
If traveling in the colder months of the year, especially if you plan on going to a more rural area, it’s a good idea to make sure that the car you rent is properly equipped for snow and ice (for example, outfitted with snow tires).
The Hamburg Airport is well-equipped with a pharmacy, medical center, and numerous stores. If you need something, you can quickly grab it before picking up your car, which will help you get on the road as soon as possible.
The airport features a charming Airport Model Exhibition, which has a complete working model of an airport, complete with lights and sounds, that will delight kids as well as adults. It’s a great option in case you need to spend additional time near the airport, especially if you are traveling with children. (Note, however, that you will need to purchase admission.)
If you plan on bringing your car rental back to Hamburg Airport, you can drop it off at the parking garage that is located across from P5.
Most car hire counters open early (around 6 or 7am) and close around midnight. For exact times, however, be sure to contact the rental company ahead of time.
