About Gibraltar (GI)

The overseas British territory of Gibraltar (GI), commonly called The Rock, is located at the southeastern tip of Spain in the Mediterranean Sea. Known for its 14th century Moorish castles and unique rock formations, Gibraltar is a fascinating destination for travelers interested in history, architecture, and high-end shopping opportunities. Its strategic location at the mouth of the Mediterranean is an important port for cruise ships and commercial maritime traffic to southern Spain. Having changed hands between Spain and the U.K. on a number of occasions, Gibraltar is now primarily significant as a corporate tax haven for international companies, though it remains a popular curiosity for tourism in the region.

  Getting around

With very limited public transit services, getting around Gibraltar and neighbouring Spain is much more efficient and satisfying when you rent a car. With the highest level of per capita car ownership in Europe, Gibraltar’s road network was virtually designed with the automobile in mind. Some of the older roads in the old town area are a bit narrow, and congestion tends to be a problem in peak hours, but generally speaking, driving in Gibraltar will pose few challenges.

Many visitors rent a car in Gibraltar and cross into neighboring Spain to stay in one of the many resorts in the area, not just because of proximity, but car hire rates and fuel prices are considerably lower in the territory. From the Spanish side, there are two highways that lead to the border crossing, the A383 and the CA34. Coming out of Gibraltar is served by one road, Winston Churchill Avenue. The area is generally congested at all hours. However, it’s been reported that authorities on the Spanish side are fond of searching vehicles coming out of Gibraltar, the purpose of which is unclear, but resulting in longer delays when exiting the territory. Also be advised that cars are not allowed in certain areas of Gibraltar, most notably in the central Western Battery, where The Rock of Gibraltar is located.

  Choosing your car

The best deals on cheap car rentals in Gibraltar are found with the major carriers like Sixt, Europcar, National, Budget, Enterprise, and Avis. Choose from minicars, economy hatchbacks, compact and fullsize sedans, SUVs, estate wagons, and 7-12 seater minivans.

Tips and advice for renting a car in Gibraltar

1

The majority of car hire vendors are located at or around Gibraltar International Airport (GIB), with few exceptions. You’ll save money by returning the car to the same location you rented it from.

2

Minicars and compact sedans are far and away the most popular car rentals in Gibraltar, and you’ll need to book well in advance to reserve your vehicle.

3

Car rentals in Gibraltar include Collision/Loss Damage Waiver (CDW/LDW) with zero excess liability, which means if the car is damaged in anyway, you’re not on the hook. Meanwhile, some companies don’t require a deposit required to drive the car off the lot, but a hold for the full amount of your car will be placed on the credit card used to make the reservation.

4

Cash and debit cards are generally not accepted for any aspect of the rental.

5

You must be 21 years old to rent a car in Gibraltar, and unlike the overwhelming majority of international destinations, there’s no underage driver’s fee. But do check the conditions of your car rental provider.

6

When booking on line, you must print the voucher and present it at the car hire counter when picking up the vehicle, although increasingly showing them the voucher on your phone will be sufficient. Otherwise, you may be charged at local rates. Again check the booking conditions.
