About Shannon Airport (SNN)
Address: Serviced By Europcar, Shannon Airport. Desk In Arrivals Hall, Shannon, Clare
Shannon Airport (SNN) is the primary air transportation hub serving the city of Limerick and southwestern Ireland, located 25 km (15 mi) from the Limerick city center. Major airport car rental providers Avis, Alamo, Hertz, Europcar, Sixt, and Budget are located in the arrivals area of the terminal.
Limerick is an easy-going riverside city at the heart of the Shannon Region, which includes County Limerick, Country Clare, and County Tipperary. Although Limerick has a wide range of historic and natural attractions, the city has generally been overshadowed by nearby Cork, 99 km (61 mi) to the south.
Public transit throughout the Shannon Region is best described as adequate. Short-term visitors will be glad they rented a car. The surrounding areas are well connected by a mix of national (N) roads and M motorways (highways). Your main concerns will be adjusting to the flow of traffic — don’t be in a rush — and driving on the left side of the road, if applicable. A good rule of thumb for driving in Ireland is: when in doubt, don’t do anything you wouldn’t do at home.
Street parking in Limerick is metered and time limit. Covered parking garages are found throughout the city. Be forewarned: Some Limerick garages don’t allow for overnight parking.
Choosing your car
We are truly in the golden age of car rentals. Gone are the days of squeezing five people and all the luggage into a 2-door Honda hatchback, because that’s all the rental company had left on the lot. But if it’s just you and a friend, a Ford minicar is perfect for exploring the region. Skoda compact and economy cars are perfect for small families and groups. If you’ve got some extra gear, BMW fullsize and Nissan SUVs have plenty of room. For groups of 5 and larger, the 7-9 seater Opel minivan is a perfect choice for road trips and sightseeing.
Tips and advice for renting a car at Shannon Airport
Roads are smaller, distances are shorter, and people move slower in Ireland. That means narrower passage on highways and country lanes, and longer than expected travel times between two seemingly adjacent destinations.
Some Shannon Airport car hire companies don’t include a Collision Damage Waiver (CDW) in the original rental offer, i.e. it’s an extra. Meanwhile, your provider may put a significant hold charge on the card used to secure your car.
Your credit card may not cover your insurance of a rental in Ireland. Check with the card issuer before you use to card to rent a car.
Animals in large numbers are common on rural roads — mostly cattle and sheep. You’re obliged to yield right of way to the herd (or flock).
Most airport car rentals are equipped with manual transmissions. Automatic is often available, at a higher rate. It sometimes happens that people reserve automatic cars but arrive to find only manual gearboxes available. If you’re the primary driver, a working knowledge for operating a manual is necessary.
Seat belts must be worn by all passengers. Children under 12 years old are not allowed in the front seat. Hands-free devices are permitted.
